Sony NEX E-mount Lens Roadmap Updated

Eight New NEX Lenses Planned


Here is the new NEX E-mount lens roadmap by Sony. It shows that there are eight new lenses coming within two years. There will be four new E-mount lenses in 2012 and four more planned for 2013. The chart above describes each upcoming lens but does not get into specifics. Here is the description and our best guess on focal length and aperture combination based on current Sony Alpha lenses:
  1. Sony G High Performance Standard Zoom - 16-50mm f/2.8?
  2. High Magnification Zoom - 18-250mm?
  3. Standard Zoom - 24-70mm?
  4. Wide Angle Zoom - 11-18mm?
  5. Large Aperture Standard Prime - 35mm f/1.8?
  6. Medium Magnification Zoom - 70-300mm?
  7. Medium Telephoto Prime - 85mm f/2.8?
  8. Thin Prime - 28mm f/2.8?

Current Sony E-mount lenses available for use with the NEX-3, NEX-5. NEX-C3. NEX-5N, NEX-7, NEX-VG10, NEX-VG20, and NEX-FS100.

  • 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Zoom Lens (SEL18200)
  • 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens (SEL1855)
  • 55-210mm Zoom Lens (SEL55210)
  • 16mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle Lens (SEL16F28)
  • 30mm f/3.5 Macro Lens (SEL30M35)
  • 50mm f/1.8 Telephoto Lens (SEL50F18)
  • Carl Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 Lens (SEL-24F18Z)

The Sony NEX Lens roadmap is always changing. We are expecting more lenses to be added to this roadmap. What lens would you want to see on the NEX system?

    A lens for great portraits would be fantastic. Now I'm torn between the 50mm and the potential 85mm for this.

    I'd also love to see Sony attempt a 50mm 0.95 lens similar to SLR Magic's but considerably less expensive.

    Don't hold your breath for a .95 lens from Sony. Sadly they seem stuck at 1.8 plus making a lens that fast is expensive and heavy no matter what you do. Now 1.4 or 1.2 should be totally possible. An f1.2 35mm would be awesome...

    The 50mm would be more versatile than an 85. Would love to see a 35/1.4 from Zeiss.

    How about a Sony OSS 35mm/f1.4 or f/1.8 lens? Especially if priced like the new OSS 50mm/f1.8 lens. And make it in black! It would be a killer lens for all-around shooting.

Use Medium Format Lenses with Sony A7 Cameras

Sony A7 ii with a Mamiya 645 80mm f/1.9 lens via Kipon Baveyes Focal Reducer. Here is a review of the Kipon Baveyes medium format lens focal reducer adapter for Sony A7 cameras.  This adapter has a lens element that concentrates the medium format image circle down to the size of a 24x36mm sensor of the Sony A7 cameras with a 0.7x factor.  The 80mm lens above has an equivalent focal length of 56mm.  The concentrated light also gives us one stop of extra light.  The f/1.9 is an equivalent f/1.36, a very fast medium format lens.
