Getting the Shot Sony A7r II vs 5d Mark III

Bokeh Battle 85mm Zeiss Otus vs Sony G Master

The video above from DigitalRev TV shows the advantage of electronic viewfinders found on Sony cameras. The evf betters optical viewfinders by providing a more accurate way to manual focus lenses. The Sony A7r II provides a magnified view for focusing. It also has focus peaking which highlights portions of the image that are in the focus zone. So getting the shot with the Otus is a much easier task with an EVF.

Another advantage shown is that Zeiss only provides autofocus lenses for Sony - the Batis line. The A7r II had no problems locking focus with the 85mm G Master. Canon and Nikon shooters can only use the Otus and Milvus line, which Sony shooters have access to as well.

Sony E-Mount Lens Roadmap Photokina 2014 Update

sony e-mount lens roadmap photokina 2014 september

Upcoming Sony / Zeiss E-mount Lenses

Photokina 2014 introduced six new full-frame lenses for the Sony E-mount family.  The E-mount lens range now covers 16mm (converter) up to 240mm.  The image above shows four new prototype Sony / Zeiss E-mount lenses, 28mm with converters, 35mm, 90mm, and a 24-240mm zoom.

The new E-mount lens roadmap added 3 lens slots compared with the previous roadmap.  The roadmap shows that seven more lenses will be announced in 2015.  The only hole we see is a fast portrait lens at around 90mm.  We are hoping that this will be the next lens announced.

Vern D took his Sony A7s and Zeiss 24-70mm FE OSS on a mountaineering adventure. The A7s low light capability counteracts the Zeiss 24-70mm maximum aperture of f/4. The max aperture is at f/4 in order to keep the Zeiss 24-70mm as a small and light package. Vern's lightweight full frame kit went to Mount Woolley, Diadem, Little Alberta and Mushroom Peak providing excellent images day or night.

Sony E-mount Lens Roadmap Updated

Updated Lens Roadmap for E-mount Cameras

Macro G Lens and High Speed Prime Zeiss Added to 2014 Release

We just noticed that the E-mount lens roadmap has been updated to provide detail to the two upcoming lenses. The roadmap suggests that we will see three more lenses before years end. One will be a Sony G Macro lens - our guess? 100mm f/2.8 macro, similar to the Sony 100mm macro.

The other lens will be a Zeiss high speed prime lens - our guess? 24mm f/1.4 maybe more of a wish. This lens could be based on the NEX's 24mm f/1.8 ZA Sonnar or the A-mount Zeiss 24mm f/2 Distagon.

Osprey Incoming Caught by Jack Scholl and the Sony A6000

Jack Scholl took out the Sony A6000 for some bird-in-flight shots.

Here is what Jack S posted:
The following is a 9 shot burst (we had 12 but didn't want to violate the 10 shot rule) with the A6000/SEL18200.

The osprey is coming right at us and fast.

The first 9 shots are OOC with no PP other than crop. The last is a simple standard LR preset of the last shot. We have shot BIF with Canon, Nikon and now Sony . . . this is a very good AF system in our opinion.

Check out the whole 9 shot series from the A6000 at dpreview. This is pretty impressive for a mirrorless system.

Footage taken with the Sony a7S

From the Sony Europe a7S Press Release.

From starry night-time skies to atmospheric, candle-lit interiors: there’s now a camera that opens up extraordinary creative possibilities for capturing flawless, emotionally engaging movie footage and professional-quality still images.

Joining the acclaimed α7 and α7R – the world’s smallest[2] full-frame interchangeable lens cameras – the α7S from Sony puts extraordinary sensitivity, low noise and spectacular 4K (QFHD: 3840×2160) image quality into the hands of serious photographers and videographers.

Equally suitable for still photography and cost-conscious movie production, the α7S delivers dramatic artistic possibilities in the smallest body of any full-frame interchangeable-lens digital camera in the world.

Key to the extraordinary sensitivity of the α7S is a specially developed new full-frame 35mm Exmor CMOS image sensor.

With a 12.2 effective megapixel count the size of each individual photoreceptive site is significantly boosted to increase their light-gathering power. Coupled with the camera’s powerful BIONZ X processing engine, this reduces image noise while increasing effective sensitivity range of the α7S to ISO 50 – ISO 409600 in expanded mode (ISO 200 – 409600 for movies).

This unrivalled sensitivity and ultra-low noise floor allows the α7S to capture beautiful images in low light conditions where a lengthy exposure would normally be needed. Thanks to the camera’s huge sensitivity, it’s possible to shoot crisp, low-noise stills and video using faster shutter speeds. Its immense dynamic range is also ideal for high-contrast scenes, effortlessly handling extreme highlights and rich, deep blacks in the same frame.

Because of the image sensor’s extraordinary sensitivity, the amount of light it can collect is dramatically increased compared with conventional cameras. The newly developed image sensor provides photographers/videographers with high dynamic range in all conditions from extremely low light to bright sunlight.

Using data read-out from every single pixel of the 35mm full-frame sensor (24p and 25p), 4K[3] images created by the α7S are impressively detailed, with outstandingly rich colours and life-like textures in every frame. Refined by the BIONZ X processor, the high-speed data stream allows the α7S to output video at 4K resolution from the HDMI connector with 4:2:2 colour sampling, for recording onto an external storage device or viewing on a compatible monitor[4].

Thanks to the full pixel read-out from the whole of the 35mm full-frame sensor, there’s a notable absence of undesirable aliasing (moiré) effects and ‘jaggies’ that betray lower-resolution video. Stunningly clear images can be recorded on a memory card in Full HD quality with XAVC S[5] recording format at the 50Mbps data rate that’s highly regarded by professional videographers.

In APS-C crop mode, the α7S supports high frame rate shooting at 120fps or 100fps with HD resolution (1280 x 720 pixels). The 120fps footage can be played back at 24p for a 5x slow-motion effect – ideal for seeing every detail of sports action or the balletic grace of a dancer.

There’s a wealth of other specialist functions to please professional videographers such as Picture Profile™ for wide ranging visual expression and S-Log2 gamma. Time code/user bit functions allow pro-style editing workflow, while an optional XLR Adaptor Microphone Kit[6] supports high-quality audio acquisition.

As already proven on the α7R, high-speed, high-precision Fast Intelligent AF has been further improved to fully exploit the new camera’s extraordinary low-light performance as low as EV-4. Other features familiar to α7 users include a high-contrast XGA OLED Tru-Finder, Wi-Fi/NFC connectivity and compatibility with the growing range of downloadable PlayMemories Camera Apps.

There’s a growing range of α lenses to take full advantage of the camera’s near-limitless creative potential. Currently under development, a brand-new full frame E-mount power zoom 28-135mm, F4 lens appeals to quality-conscious movie-makers. In addition, Sony is collaboratively working with third parties to support pro-quality 4K video workflow. A new XLR adaptor kit with a direct attachment mechanism is also under development.

The new α7S full-frame interchangeable lens digital camera from Sony will be available summer 2014.

Sony 70-200mm FE E-mount Lens Review by DxOMark

sony 70-200 fe lens review a7r

DxOMark tests the new Sony 70-200mm f/4 G FE lens on the A7r and finds that it performs well against the competition. This lens would also work great with the fast autofocus of the Sony A6000 with an equivalent field of view of 135-300mm on the aps-c sensor.

From the DxOMark review:
The Sony’s performance is very good and sharpness levels are very high, and even though it can’t quite match the best in class – the Nikkor 70-200mm f4 - at 200mm, it’s still unlikely to disappoint. Coming bundled with a tripod collar, the Sony even slightly undercuts the rival Nikkor model, making the FE 70-200mm f4G OSS look good value without compromising on quality or practical features.

Sony a6000 vs Sony alpha a65 Focus Lock

Sony a6000 vs Sony alpha a65 vs NEX-7 Focus Lock

Sony Korea puts the new 11 frame per second Sony a6000 up against the 10 frame per second Alpha a65 and the NEX-7. The a6000 best both cameras because of two new features.

Ultra-fast Response
Capture the perfect moment – the a6000 realizes 11 frames per second continuous shooting with AF (Auto Focus) tracking by making the most of the wide-area 179-point phase-detection AF sensor. Even when dealing with a moving subject the a6000's superb moving-subject tracking performance ensures you get the shot during still or video capture.

The Fastest Focusing Camera in the World
Enhanced Fast Hybrid auto focus combines speedy phase-detection AF with highly accurate contrast-detection AF, which has been accelerated through a new Spatial Object Detection algorithm, to achieve among the fastest autofocusing performance of any full-frame camera in the world6. First, phase-detection AF with 179 densely placed phase-detection AF points swiftly and efficiently moves the lens to bring the subject nearly into focus. Then contrast-detection AF with wide AF coverage fine-tunes the focusing in the blink of an eye.

The new Sony a6000 is a month away from release and is $750 with the lens.
