Fuji X100s Digital Split Image Focusing

Fuji X100s Digital Split Image Focusing Demo

Here's a nice feature of the upcoming Fuji X100s that we'd like to see in a future NEX camera. They are using the PDAF sensor to create a digital split image to mimic classic manual focus slrs and rangefinders. You can also see that they've finally included focus peaking to one of their cameras. All NEX cameras include focus peaking since June 2011.

NEX-7 with Voigtlander Sigma and Fuji Lenses in Turkey

NEX-7 with Voigtlander 15mm, Sigma 30mm, and Fujinon 50mm lens

Here is a set of pictures by Emmanuel C. taken in Turkey with his Sony NEX-7. He brought along a pair of adapted manual focus lenses: Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5 Super Wide Heliar and the Fujinon 50mm f/1.9 lens. He also used the native E-mount autofocus the Sigma 30mm f/2.8 DN lens. This provides a nice set covering 22.5mm, 45mm, and 75mm equivalent field of view.

Sony NEX-5R vs Fujifilm X-E1 (front view)

Fujifilm announced their new X sersies camera dubbed the X-E1. It shares the same 16.3 mp sensor with the Fujifilm X-Pro1. The X-E1 is a smaller, lighter X-Pro1 without the hybrid viewfinder. The X-E1 only uses the electronic viewfinder from Sony.

Let's see how the Fujifilm X-E1 compares to Sony's new WIFI wonder, the NEX-5R.

Sony NEX-7 vs Fuji X-Pro 1 by EOSHD

sony nex-7 vs fujifilm x-pro 1

It looks like the Fuji X-Pro 1 didn't make a favorable 1st impression with the guys at EOSHD. Here's an excerpt comparing the Sony NEX-7 with the more expensive X-Pro 1.

The NEX 7 has a far better video mode, very good manual controls, better AF and better manual focus. It has an articulated screen of the same resolution, a better EVF, a smaller body, with a wider range of lenses, some with optical image stabilisation (the X-Pro 1 lacks image stabilisation altogether be it in-camera or on the lens), peaking for MF and a wider range of features overall in the firmware.

In my opinion, the optical viewfinder is superseded by the OLED EVF and no amount of hybrid niceness can save it. 5 years ago, it was preferable to have an optical viewfinder because EVFs were rubbish. Now, it is the opposite.

Thanks EOSHD!

Sony NEX-7 (top) vs Fuji X-Pro1

Here is another challenger for the Sony NEX system. The new Fuji X-Pro1 builds on the success of the Fuji X100 first to introduce a hybrid viewfinder. It has a 2nd generation hybrid viewfinder and a new "organic" aps-c cmos sensor. The X-Pro1 is being introduced with 3 prime lenses: 18mm f/2.0, 35mm f/1.4, and 60mm f/2.4 macro. The 1.5x crop factor of X-Pro 1 means that the 3 lenses provide an equivalent FOV of 27mm, 52mm, and 90mm. Here is what we know so far and this will be updated when the X-Pro1 stats are officially announced.

Sony NEX-7 Size Comparison Video by Luminous Landscape

Luminous Landscape is doing a rolling review of the Sony NEX-7. So far they've covered the user interface and high iso capabilities of the NEX-7.

The fourth installment of the review is perfect for gearheads. The NEX-7 is shown with most of the E-mount lenses and the LA-EA2 lens adapter. The camera is also shown alongside the NEX-5N with viewfinder, the Fuji X100, the Leica M9 with a 50mm Summilux, and the Panasonic GH2. The video gives us a good idea of the size of each camera and lens. Grab a glass of wine, dim the lights, and play the video in full screen - get ready for 12 minutes of gear lust.

NEX-7 24mp APS-C Sensor vs Leica, Canon, Nikon, and Fuji

DxOMark published their test results for the Sony NEX-7 sensor and we wanted to see how it compares to the most popular cameras around.

The top row shows the NEX-7 vs the full frame contenders, Leica M9 and the Canon 5d Mark II. The NEX-7 comes out on top overall with a score of 81. The Canon 5dII is a close second gaining a DxOMark of 79. The Leica M9 comes in third with a score of 69. The NEX-7 edges out both full frame contenders in Portrait (Color Depth) and Landscape (Dynamic Range). The 5dII wins in the Low Light ISO category followed by the NEX-7 with the M9 in third.

The bottom row of the image above shows the APS-C sensored cameras. The NEX-7 and the Nikon D7000 are the top APS-C cameras in this comparison. The Fuji X100 comes in third and the Canon 7D comes in last.

The scores are based on RAW sensor performance of the camera as tested by DxOMark.

Check out DxOMark's favorable impression of the NEX-7.

Thanks DxOMark!
