Sony A6000 Replaces NEX-6

sony a6000 ilce silver

Hands On with the Sony A6000

sony a6000 nex-6 replacement

Sony A6000 Available for Pre-order

Here is a quick look at the newly announce Sony A6000 camera. It replaces the Sony NEX-6 but keeps the same form factor. The big improvement is the 24 megapixel sensor up from 16 mp on the NEX-6. It also boasts the fastest AF for an APS-C mirrorless camera with focus lock in 0.06 seconds. The speed burst is bumped up to 11 fps. All this while keeping the same NEX-6 price for the A6000 body at $648.

The silver looks a bit like champagne and looks handsome with the black grip. This announcement has us excited for the NEX-7 replacement.

Here is the full A6000 Press Release from Sony:

  • Fast Hybrid AF gives world’s fastest[i] autofocus performance of just 0.06 sec with high precision accuracy
  • Extremely wide autofocus coverage area with 179 focal points
  • 24.3 megapixel Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor featuring gapless-on-chip design
  • BIONZ X processor for pro-quality photos and Full HD video
  • Light, compact and easy to use with built-in flash, OLED Tru-Finder™ and two control dials
NFC and Wi-Fi for One-touch sharing/remote control from your mobile
  • Boost your creativity with a range of downloadable PlayMemories Camera Apps™

The speedy new ILCE-6000 from Sony boasts the quickest AF performancei of any interchangeable lens digital camera, snapping subjects into sharp focus in just 0.06 seconds. From spontaneous smiles to towering tennis serves, you’ll capture those fleeting moments that other cameras miss. And thanks to the 24.3 megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ X processor, every frame is crammed with rich detail and texture.

Boosting Sony’s mirrorless line-up, the α6000 comes in two iconic designs, black and titanium, sure to inspire jealous glances from other photographers. For users who have been thinking about taking advantage of size and weight advantages of a mirrorless camera but don’t want to sacrifice super-quick autofocus, the α6000 now renders that conversation moot.

Even quicker than most professional DSLRs, the phenomenal autofocus speed of the α6000 is powered by Sony’s advanced Fast Hybrid AF system. A 179-point focal plane phase-detection AF sensor is teamed with high-precision contrast-detection AF. This potent combination delivers the world’s fastesti AF performance of any interchangeable lens camera, plus continuous shooting at a blazing 11fps with highly accurate autofocus tracking. Nothing gets past the α6000 – even fast-moving subjects like athletes and acrobatic pets.

There are plenty more premium features packed into the camera’s compact, purposeful body. Composing scenes is a pleasure through the clear, bright OLED Tru-Finder™. Preview the effects of adjusting focus, exposure and other settings: what you see is exactly what you get.

Intuitively-placed mode and control dials on top of the camera allow effortless adjustment of shooting settings while you’re focused on the scene in front of you. A total of 7 customisable buttons – including two dedicated custom buttons – give swift access to any one of 43 assignable functions to satisfy any photo enthusiast. And for extra flexibility in any situation, there’s a built-in flash to brighten up portraits or gloomy indoor shots.

It’s easy to share shots on your mobile: on-board NFC and Wi-Fi allow a one-touch connection with your Xperia™ or NFC-compatible Android smartphones and tablets. A single touch also activates Smart Remote Control, linking the camera to fire the shutter from a distance and view photos on your mobile.

The exciting possibilities of the α6000 grow with your creative ambitions. PlayMemories Camera Apps enhance your photo experience with a growing range of free and paid apps, spanning artistic effects, utilities and more. Learn more at www.sony.net/pmca/. The α6000 is also compatible with Sony’s Camera Remote API programme[ii].

Style-matching optional accessories for the α6000 include the LCS-EBC just-fit Body Case that protects the camera from dust and everyday scratches. It’s possible to transfer data via connected USB, use the NFC function or mount the camera on a tripod without having to remove the case.

The LCS-ASB1 Active Sling Bag protects the camera while you’re out and about. Carry it in one hand, or wear over either shoulder – the bag’s water-repellent fabric and zipper keeps things safe and dry.

The LCS-BBXL[iii] Soft Carrying Case is great for protecting your long lens like the SEL18200LE or SEL55210 while you’re out and about. The water-repellent case also offers extra space to store a lens hood. Also available, the PCK-LM17 is a semi-hard protective sheet that safeguards the camera’s LCD screen against scratches, dust and fingerprints.

Sony NEX-6 Milky Way Time Lapse

Milky Way Time Lapse by David H.

Here are the settings David H. used on his NEX-6 with the help of PlayMemories Camera Apps.
Camera settings: 16mm, ISO 1600, f3.5, 30sec.To extend the battery life I made a cover to put over the EVF to trick the camera. This turns off the light on the back of the main screen and conserves a lot of power. I did this using the Time Lapse app on 40 second intervals (10 seconds longer than exposure time to allow the camera to process images). Still trying to figure out if you can use the Time Lapse app in RAW format.

Here is a video showing the NEX / Time Lapse App interface.

NEX PlayMemories Camera Apps Time Lapse

The Time Lapse App is available for $9.99 from the PlayMemories Camera App store. PlayMemories Camera Apps are compatible with Sony NEX-5R and NEX-6 cameras.

Three New Sony E-mount Lenses

Three New E-Mount Lenses Announced

Here are three new Sony E-mount lenses for your NEX-3 to NEX-7 Cameras. All provide automated function on your Alpha NEX Cameras. This fulfills the Sony NEX lens roadmap for 2012. Three new Sony lenses are scheduled for next year, a medium magnification zoom, a medium telephoto prime lens, and a pancake prime lens. *As Bilou pointed out below, a fourth lens is coming later this year, a high performance "G" standard zoom.

sel1018 10mm-18mm e-mount lens oss

NEX-6 with 10-18mm f/4 OSS Lens

This would be a great travel lens where tight streets require a wide angle lens. The 10-18mm focal length converts to 15mm-27mm EFOV on the APS-C sensor. The wide angle zoom SEL1818 can be pre ordered for $849 with a delivery by mid November.
The SEL-1018 super wide-angle zoom lens is perfect for taking photos of sweeping landscapes and producing striking images with emphasized perspective. If you're seeking a wider minimum focal length than offered by standard wide-angle zoom lenses, the SEL-1018 is the ideal choice for you. Featuring a minimum focal length of only 10mm (15mm in 35mm camera equivalency), the SEL-1018 wide-angle zoom lens delivers highly-detailed, super wide-angle photos. With a constant maximum aperture of f/4 through the entire focal length range, you'll be able to use the widest aperture at every focal length. Even in low light, you can take advantage of the bright aperture to utilize fast shutter speeds without needing to increase ISO sensitivity.

16mm 50mm powerzoom oss e-mount lens selp1650

NEX-6 with 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 PowerZoom Lens

A replacement for the standard 18-55mm OSS kit lens. The retractable powerzoom 16-50mm OSS lens provides an FOV of 24mm to 75mm. Good general purpose lens in a small package. The SELP1650 is priced at $349.

Sony 16-50mm PowerZoom in Action

Measuring just 3/16" (29.9mm) when fully retracted, this SELP-1650 retractable zoom lens is super compact and easy to carry so you can quickly whip out your camera and spontaneously grab shots as they occur. It's perfect for traveling and other scenarios that require a lightweight, compact camera and lens combo. It covers a 16mm to 50mm range (35mm equivalent = 24-75mm) for flexible shooting, and is equipped with one ED (extra-low dispersion) and four aspherical elements, resulting in a high-performance lens that is surprisingly compact.

35mm 1.8 oss e-mount lens sel35f18

35mm f/1.8 OSS E-mount Lens

This would be the perfect companion to the 10-18mm f/4 lens. The 35mm f/1.8 lens provides light when indoors or the sun goes down. The 50mm EFOV is the classic standard versatile focal length for street photographers. The SEL35F18 will cost $449.
High performance and a compact design make the SEL-35F18 prime lens an ideal second lens that's easy to carry around while capturing the action. It's perfect for a wide variety of photos, including snapshots while strolling, night shots (thanks to the bright maximum aperture) and portraits with beautifully defocused backgrounds. Newly-designed optics reduces spherical aberration and coma for sharp images even when shooting wide open. Combined with built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, your photos and videos will be crisp, clear and blur-free.
