What is Sony A9 Blackout-free shooting?

Image
Sony A9 at 20 fps Blackout-free Shooting
From Sony:

Blackout-free shooting
Thanks to the non-mechanical electronic shutter system, you can observe the reality of what you’re shooting through the electronic viewfinder even during continuous shooting, without blackout interruption that typically occurs among optical viewfinders due to up-and-down mirror motion. Enhanced speed of the image sensor eliminates distracting EVF display lag in continuous shooting, so that you can compose images with natural comfort, like seeing scenes with your own eyes.

New Sony A9 ILCE-9 Camera
This is the new flagship camera from Sony dubbed the A9, model designation ILCE-9.  It boasts 20 fps shooting with 693 focus points and a blackout-free 3.69 mp electronic viewfinder.  The camera is capable of shooting 4K (2160p) movies.  The A9 has dual memory card slots and a new battery.

Use Medium Format Lenses with Sony A7 Cameras

Image
Sony A7 ii with a Mamiya 645 80mm f/1.9 lens via Kipon Baveyes Focal Reducer.

Here is a review of the Kipon Baveyes medium format lens focal reducer adapter for Sony A7 cameras.  This adapter has a lens element that concentrates the medium format image circle down to the size of a 24x36mm sensor of the Sony A7 cameras with a 0.7x factor.  The 80mm lens above has an equivalent focal length of 56mm.  The concentrated light also gives us one stop of extra light.  The f/1.9 is an equivalent f/1.36, a very fast medium format lens. This a manual focus lens adapter.

Let's go a step further by adding the TECHART LM-EA7 Autofocus Lens Adapter with the Kipon Baveyes we can have a medium format lens autofocus system.

Getting the Shot Sony A7r II vs 5d Mark III

Image
Bokeh Battle 85mm Zeiss Otus vs Sony G Master
The video above from DigitalRev TV shows the advantage of electronic viewfinders found on Sony cameras. The evf betters optical viewfinders by providing a more accurate way to manual focus lenses. The Sony A7r II provides a magnified view for focusing. It also has focus peaking which highlights portions of the image that are in the focus zone. So getting the shot with the Otus is a much easier task with an EVF.

Another advantage shown is that Zeiss only provides autofocus lenses for Sony - the Batis line. The A7r II had no problems locking focus with the 85mm G Master. Canon and Nikon shooters can only use the Otus and Milvus line, which Sony shooters have access to as well.

Which do you prefer?

Sony E-Mount Lens Roadmap Photokina 2014 Update

Image
Upcoming Sony / Zeiss E-mount Lenses Photokina 2014 introduced six new full-frame lenses for the Sony E-mount family.  The E-mount lens range now covers 16mm (converter) up to 240mm.  The image above shows four new prototype Sony / Zeiss E-mount lenses, 28mm with converters, 35mm, 90mm, and a 24-240mm zoom.

The new E-mount lens roadmap added 3 lens slots compared with the previous roadmap.  The roadmap shows that seven more lenses will be announced in 2015.  The only hole we see is a fast portrait lens at around 90mm.  We are hoping that this will be the next lens announced.

Sony E-mount Lens Roadmap Photokina 2014 Update Below are more details on the new lenses announce at Photokina 2014.  Included are photos of the prototypes found at Photokina and quick mock ups on a Sony A7 body.

Mountaineering with the Sony A7s with Zeiss 24-70mm FE by burnymeister

Vern D took his Sony A7s and Zeiss 24-70mm FE OSS on a mountaineering adventure. The A7s low light capability counteracts the Zeiss 24-70mm maximum aperture of f/4. The max aperture is at f/4 in order to keep the Zeiss 24-70mm as a small and light package. Vern's lightweight full frame kit went to Mount Woolley, Diadem, Little Alberta and Mushroom Peak providing excellent images day or night.

Sony SEL1635Z Mounted on a Sony A7s from PhotographyBlog
The wait is over. People have been hunting for a wide angle lens for the Sony A7 cameras ever since the full frame e-mount cameras were released. Some have been using the Sony 10-18mm at 16-18mm with great results on the Sony A7 bodies. Above is the new Zeiss 16-35mm f/4 Vario Tessar FE ZA OSS Lens or SEL1635Z, announced at Photokina 2014. It is fully compatible with E-mount cameras with autofocus and auto aperture control. The lens is designed for the A7 and will cover the 24x36mm sensor. The SEL1635Z will also work with the Sony a6000 and NEX cameras where it will provide a EFOV of 24mm to 52mm, nice walkaround lens range.

Below are specs for the SEL1635Z and samples from Mark Galer who has been using the SEL1635Z on the Sony A7s.

Sony A5100 Touch Shutter with Autofocus in Action

goodphoto.kr shows us the new Sony a5100 in action. The rear lcd touch screen is used to activate autofocus and trigger the shutter simultaneously. This can be useful when the camera is not held in the standard position and the shutter button is at an awkward position to depress. This is not possible with the sony a6000. The chart below is a quick comparison between the Sony a5100 and the a6000.

ijsvogel took out his Sony A7s, LA-EA4 lens adapter, and the Sony 500mm f/4.0 SSM G lens to capture some kingfishers and we think he did very well. He states that the autofocus did very well with the LA-EA4 adapter on the A7s. All the shots were taken on a tripod.

Sony E-mount Lens Roadmap Updated

Updated Lens Roadmap for E-mount Cameras

Macro G Lens and High Speed Prime Zeiss Added to 2014 Release

We just noticed that the E-mount lens roadmap has been updated to provide detail to the two upcoming lenses. The roadmap suggests that we will see three more lenses before years end. One will be a Sony G Macro lens - our guess? 100mm f/2.8 macro, similar to the Sony 100mm macro.

The other lens will be a Zeiss high speed prime lens - our guess? 24mm f/1.4 maybe more of a wish. This lens could be based on the NEX's 24mm f/1.8 ZA Sonnar or the A-mount Zeiss 24mm f/2 Distagon.

ArtBenny tests the Sony A7s' high iso capability by shooting in a pitch black room. The Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 Sonnar FE lens was used for the test. He states that the A7s was still able to autofocus in such low light.

The Sony A7s will be available on July 8th and is priced at $2500.

Sony a6000 Autofocus vs Bird In Flight

Image
Osprey Incoming Caught by Jack Scholl and the Sony A6000
Jack Scholl took out the Sony A6000 for some bird-in-flight shots.

Here is what Jack S posted:
The following is a 9 shot burst (we had 12 but didn't want to violate the 10 shot rule) with the A6000/SEL18200.

The osprey is coming right at us and fast.

The first 9 shots are OOC with no PP other than crop. The last is a simple standard LR preset of the last shot. We have shot BIF with Canon, Nikon and now Sony . . . this is a very good AF system in our opinion.
Check out the whole 9 shot series from the A6000 at dpreview. This is pretty impressive for a mirrorless system.

Sony 70-200mm FE AF Test
SLR Club posted this video to show the autofocus speed of the Sony 70-200mm f/4 FE OSS on the Sony A7. The A7 has the autofocus advantage of having 117 phase detection autofocus points, which the A7r does not have. Both cameras have 25 contrast detection autofocus points.
